Push Notification Settings

A closer look at how push alerts are grouped, what duty states mean, and the options behind each notification.

This page explains the structure behind the push notification settings, so the list on Notification Settings makes sense when you open it. Every notification belongs to a group and a sub-group, carries its own set of options, and stores a separate setting for each duty state. Understanding that shape is what lets you tune exactly which alerts reach you and when.

Push notification settings

Overview

Notifications are organized in three levels.

LevelDescriptionWhat you see
GroupA top-level category of notificationsA header you tap to expand
Sub-groupA set of related notifications inside a groupA header you tap to expand
NotificationA single alertA row you tap to edit

The order is fixed. Groups appear in the order your agency defines them, and sub-groups and notifications keep their order inside each level, so the list looks the same every time you open it.

Duty States

Each notification stores a complete, independent setting for every duty state.

Duty stateWhen it applies
On DutyWhile you are actively on duty
On CallWhile you are on call
Off DutyWhile you are off duty

What is stored per duty state:

Stored valueMeaning
Alert typeNone, Silent, Normal or Critical
RepageWhether the alert pages you again
EscalateWhether the alert escalates if unanswered
Alert locationWhether location-based alerting applies
LocationsWhich map layers the alert is tied to
SoundWhich sound plays

This is why an alert can be Critical while you are On Duty and Silent while Off Duty without you having to change anything when your shift ends.

note

The settings screen edits one duty state at a time and opens on On Duty. The counters at the top of that screen also count On Duty settings, so what they show is your on-duty picture, not a total across all three states.

Options on Each Notification

When you open a notification's edit popup, these are the controls available.

OptionWhat it controlsWhen it is available
Alert TypeNone, Silent, Normal or Critical deliveryAlways
SoundThe sound played, or Default SoundNormal and Critical only
RepageWhether the alert repages youNormal and Critical only; forced off otherwise
EscalateWhether the alert escalates if unansweredNormal and Critical only; forced off otherwise
Alert LocationWhether location-based alerting is usedOnly when the notification allows location
LocationsThe map layers tied to the alertOnly while Alert Location is on

How the alert type changes the popup

Alert typeSound listRepage switchEscalate switch
NoneCovered and unusableOff, faded, untappableOff, faded, untappable
SilentCovered and unusableOff, faded, untappableOff, faded, untappable
NormalUsable, Default Sound preselectedAvailableAvailable
CriticalUsable, Default Sound preselectedAvailableAvailable

Switching type inside the popup always resets your sound choice, so check the sound after changing the level.

Configurable and Locked Notifications

Not every notification is yours to change.

NotificationBehavior when tapped
User-configurableThe edit popup opens
Locked by your agencyNothing happens — no popup, no message

A locked notification still counts toward the counters at the top of the settings screen, so a number you cannot account for may include alerts your agency has fixed.

How Sounds Are Chosen

  1. Each notification can use the Default Sound or any active sound from your library.
  2. Default Sound always sits at the top of the list. Every other sound follows in alphabetical order.
  3. Default Sound does not mean one fixed tone — it resolves to your Critical default for a critical alert and your Normal default for a normal one.
  4. Whichever sound is currently in use for this notification is highlighted in blue when the popup opens.
  5. Each row shows the sound's length in minutes and seconds, and a play button to preview it.
  6. Inactive sound names are shown in red and cannot be chosen.
SituationExact message
Tapping a sound while the type is None or Silent"Please select normal or critical to set sound"
Tapping an inactive sound"This sound file is not active yet"
info

Because Default Sound is a pointer rather than a fixed tone, changing your Normal or Critical default on Notification Sounds instantly changes every notification set to Default Sound. That is usually what you want — it is one change instead of dozens.

Location-Based Alerting

Some notifications can be limited to specific geography.

  1. Turn on Alert Location. Until you do, the Locations selector is faded and untappable.
  2. Tap Locations and pick one or more map layers. Only layers your agency has marked for alerting are offered.
  3. Your chosen layer names are listed on the selector, separated by commas. With nothing chosen it reads Select.

Notifications that do not support location show both Alert Location and Locations faded out permanently. That is a property of the notification, not something you can enable.

How This Connects

  • Where the data comes from. The whole structure — groups, sub-groups, notification names, which are configurable, and which allow location — is sent by your agency and loaded when you sign in. It is then kept on the device, which is why the settings screen opens with no wait and works offline.
  • What updates it. Your agency changing its notification catalog. You will see a changed structure after your next sign-in, not while the app is running.
  • Where you change these values. All editing happens on Notification Settings. This page describes the model behind that screen.
  • When changes take effect. When you tap Save on the settings screen. Offline, they are stored and flagged to sync on your next connection.
  • What the settings drive. Which alerts arrive, how loudly, and whether they repeat. The alerts themselves land in Notifications. Incident pages and new chat messages are both in this catalog, so these settings decide how you learn about a call in Incidents or a message in Messages.
  • Sounds. Defaults and your uploaded sounds come from Notification Sounds.
  • Locations. The layers offered here are the alerting layers your agency maintains, related to the default layers you can pick on General Settings and shown on the Reference Map.
  • Muting. Mute All Notifications overrides every level here for its duration without changing any of these stored values.
  • Offline and reconnect. Nothing on this screen needs a live connection to read or change. Saving offline queues the update.

Troubleshooting

If this happensWhat to do
A notification will not openIt is locked by your agency and is not user-configurable.
The counters do not match what you expectThey count On Duty settings only, and they include notifications your agency has locked.
An alert is loud on shift and loud off shiftEach duty state is separate. Edit the Off Duty setting too, not just On Duty.
Changing a notification's level lost your sound choiceExpected — switching type resets the sound to Default Sound. Pick the sound again after setting the level.
Default Sound plays the wrong toneIt points at your Normal or Critical default. Check both on Notification Sounds.
"Please select normal or critical to set sound"Sounds only apply to Normal and Critical. Change the alert type first.
"This sound file is not active yet"That sound is inactive — it appears in red. Choose an active one.
Locations is faded even with Alert Location onTurn Alert Location on first; if it too is faded, the notification does not support location.
No layers are offered under LocationsYour agency has not marked any layers for alerting.
The group structure looks out of dateThe catalog is loaded at sign-in. Sign out and back in to pick up your agency's changes.
