Search Event Location

Pick where an event takes place by searching an address or choosing a point on the map.

This screen sets an event's location. You can type an address, pick from the suggestions, or simply move the map until the center sits on the spot you want. Either way the app works out the nearest street address for you and shows it along the bottom, ready to confirm. What comes back to the event is both the readable place name and the exact coordinates, which is what makes directions work later.

The map tools menu

Tap the options control for the same tools available on the main map screens.

These layers are there because picking a staging location often means looking at what else is going on. They do not change what gets saved — only the map center does.

Getting Here

1. Open Home, then tap Calendar.
2. Create or edit an event — see Add or Edit an Event.
3. Tap the Location field.

The same screen is used to fill in an address on a Directory contact, and to add a forecast location on the Weather screen. It behaves identically; only where the result goes is different.

Choosing a Location by Searching

1. Tap the search field and start typing an address or place name.
2. Suggestions appear as you type, each with a name and a fuller description underneath.
3. Tap a suggestion. The map moves to that place and zooms in, and the app works out the address for the map center.
4. The selected-location bar appears along the bottom with the address it found.
5. Tap Save.

Choosing a Location on the Map

1. Pan and zoom the map so the spot you want sits at the center.
2. Each time you stop moving the map, the app looks up the address for the new center and updates the bar along the bottom.
3. Tap Save.

The app also starts you off near your own position: with location permission granted it centers on where you are and looks up that address, so a location on scene is usually one tap away.

tip

For a spot with no street address — a turnout, a field, a trailhead — just center the map on it. The app falls back to showing the coordinates, and those are what navigation actually uses.

What Gets Saved

Tapping Save while the app is still working out the address shows "Please wait a while, converting coordinates to address". Wait a moment for the bar to settle and save again.

Only the last spot you confirmed is kept. Search again or move the map as many times as you like before saving — nothing is stored until you tap Save.

Using Street View

1. Tap the street view control, or choose Street View from the options menu.
2. The app asks "Are you sure you want to open street view?" under the heading Street View.
3. Choose Yes to open a street-level view of the map center, or No to stay on the map.

Street view is useful for checking access before you commit a location — whether a gate faces the road, whether an apparatus can turn in.

If your agency uses downloadable reference map data and it is still downloading, the app tells you so rather than showing an incomplete map.

How This Connects

• Where the data goes. Saving hands the place name and its coordinates back to whatever screen sent you here. For a calendar event that fills the Location field on Add or Edit an Event; the coordinates travel with the event and are saved alongside it.
• Event Detail. Those coordinates are what Event Detail uses to show the event on a map and to run turn-by-turn directions. A location picked here is why navigation to an event works at all.
• Map. The base map, the layers and the tools are shared with the main map screens — see Map Style Options and Reference Map. Street view is the same screen as Google Street View.
• Directory. Filling an address on a contact uses this screen, and the street, city, state, country and ZIP come back as separate fields on the address popup in Add a Contact.
• Weather. Adding a forecast location on the Weather screen uses this screen too; the place name and coordinates become a saved forecast location.
• Event types. If your agency gives an event type a default location, that location was chosen the same way and comes with its own coordinates, which is why picking a type can fill the field for you.
• Offline and reconnect. A location saved without a connection carries its coordinates, so the event is still navigable. The readable address may show as coordinates until someone edits the event while online.

Troubleshooting

If this happens	What to do
Saving shows "Please wait a while, converting coordinates to address"	The app is still looking up the address. Wait for the bottom bar to update and save again.
The bottom bar shows coordinates instead of an address	No street address could be found for that spot, or you are offline. The location still works for navigation.
No suggestions appear when you type	Place search needs a connection. Move the map to the spot instead.
The map opens far from where you are	Location permission was declined, so the app cannot center on you. Grant it in your phone's settings, or use Current Location from the options menu.
The address is close but not exact	Pan the map a little and let the bar refresh. The center of the map is the spot being saved.
Street view shows nothing useful	There is no street-level imagery for that spot. Choose No and use the map instead.
The map is blank or partly loaded	Reference map data may still be downloading, or the area is not cached offline. Reconnect and try again.
You picked the wrong place	Search again or move the map. Only the spot you confirm with Save is kept.
Directions to the event later go somewhere odd	Reopen the event, tap Location, pick the spot again on the map and save, so fresh coordinates are stored.
