GAR Risk Assessment

Score operational risk across eight categories and get an instant green, amber, or red go / no-go reading.

The GAR (Green-Amber-Red) risk assessment is a structured way to gauge how risky a mission or assignment is before you commit to it. You give each of eight risk categories a score from 0 to 10, and the banner at the top adds them up and turns green, amber, or red so the whole team can see the risk level at a glance. A title and description go with the scores so the assessment can be saved, shared, and revisited.

The Eight Categories

Each category is scored 0 to 10, and each carries its own guidance text on screen.

Category	What to consider
Supervision	The presence of qualified, accessible and effective supervision on the incident, with a clear chain of command in place.
Planning	Whether incident information is adequate and clear, there is time to plan, operational guidelines are current, personnel are briefed, and team input is sought.
Contingency Resources	Backup resources that can assist if needed, a shared communications plan and frequencies, and whether an alternative plan has been evaluated.
Communication	How well personnel are briefed and communicating, how effective the communication system is, whether a communication plan exists, and whether the operational environment values input.
Team Selection	The qualifications and experience level of the individuals, and their experience of the mission being performed.
Team Fitness	The physical and mental state of the crew, team morale, and any distractions.
Environment	Factors affecting personnel and equipment such as time, temperature, precipitation, topography and altitude, plus site factors such as narrow canyons, forest canopy, technical terrain, snow and swiftwater.
Incident Complexity	Severity, exposure time and probability of mishap, and the difficulty of the mission against the proficiency of personnel.

Getting Here

1. Open a Server UI form that includes a GAR risk assessment.
2. Tap to add a new GAR entry, or tap an existing one to edit it.
3. The screen opens with the eight categories listed and the status banner at the top.
4. A new assessment starts with every category at 0 and an empty title and description. Reopening an existing one loads its saved title, description, and eight scores, and the title reads Edit.

Scoring Each Category

1. Tap a category row. The row expands to reveal its scoring control, and any other open row closes, so only one category is open at a time.
2. Drag the slider, or tap a numbered swatch, to set a score from 0 to 10. The number beside the category and its colour swatch update immediately, and the banner at the top recalculates as you go.
3. The swatch matching the current score is outlined so you can see at a glance where the category sits.
4. Tap the row again to collapse it, then move to the next category.
5. Repeat until all eight categories have a score above zero. Any category left at 0 keeps the assessment incomplete.

Reading the Total

The banner tallies the eight scores and shows the overall risk level, but only once every category has been scored.

The banner shows the number alongside the band, so a fully scored assessment totalling 42 reads 42-AMBER. The background of the banner takes the same colour, which is what people read across a vehicle bay.

The total only reflects real risk once every category has a score above zero. A grey No Score banner means the assessment is incomplete, not that the mission is safe.

Saving the Assessment

1. Enter a Title. Saving without one shows "Enter title".
2. Enter a Description. Saving without one shows "Enter description".
3. Tap Save. A brief progress indicator appears while the assessment is sent to your agency's records.
4. When it succeeds you are returned to the form, with the assessment listed under its title and total. If the server refuses it, the app shows the server's own message so you can correct and retry.

Leaving with Unsaved Changes

1. If you have changed any score and use the back control, the app asks first, with an alert titled Data Updated and the message "Do you want to save changes?".
2. Tap Save to validate and store it, exactly as the Save button does.
3. Tap Cancel to leave without saving. Your scores for this session are discarded.
4. With nothing changed, the back control simply returns you to the form.

Use the description to note the specific hazards behind an amber or red score, and what you are doing about them. The next person reading the assessment needs to know what has to be mitigated, not just that the number was high.

Saving a GAR assessment needs a connection. With no coverage, tapping Save does nothing and the screen stays open, so your scores are not lost while you move into signal.

How This Connects

• Where the assessment comes from. The eight categories and their guidance text are fixed by the GAR method, not by your agency, so a GAR panel reads the same on every REDENES device. What varies is where your agency placed it on a form.
• Where it goes when saved. The title, description, and all eight scores are sent to your agency's records under this assessment's own identity, so reopening it later edits the same entry rather than creating a new one. See Data and Sync.
• Which other parts of the app use it. A saved assessment appears on the form that holds it, travels with any share of that form (see Share a Form), and when the form belongs to a call it can be read from the Incidents List. Completed assessments are commonly exported alongside other paperwork; see PDF Generator.
• Offline and reconnect. Scoring works offline; saving does not. Score the assessment where you are, then save once you are back in coverage, keeping the screen open in the meantime. See Offline Mode.

Troubleshooting

If this happens	What to do
The banner still reads No Score	At least one category is still 0. Work down the list and score every one of the eight.
Nothing happens when you tap Save	Either a required field is empty, in which case a message names it, or you have no connection. Check both.
"Enter title" or "Enter description" appears	Both are required. Fill them in and save again.
Your scores vanished	You left with the back control and chose Cancel on the Data Updated prompt. Score the assessment again and save it.
The total looks too low	A category you thought you had set is still 0. Grey swatches show which ones.
You cannot open a scoring control	Only one row opens at a time. Tap the row you want; the open one closes.
The assessment will not save at all	Read the server's message. If it persists, note the total and categories on paper and tell your administrator.
